Sunday School: The Church
Ecclesiology: I Believe in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church
April 8 through May 27, 2007 (Rev. Marcelo Souza)
This eight-week class will address issues related to the Church – its marks, mission, nurture, gifts, government, structure, relation to the State, and more. What is the Church? How is it to glorify God? What distinctions need to be made, and what distortions should be corrected? What is its primary function – nurture or evangelism? We will use Edmund P. Clowney’s The Church as a textbook, as well as the Three Forms of Unity and the Westminster Standards.
During this class we will also discuss "Christianity Explored." Be sure to come and find out about a wonderful opportunity for evangelism as you invite family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc., to explore the Gospel of Mark asking three questions:
- Who is Jesus
- Why did He come?
- What does it mean to follow Him?
Within the context of a class on the nature of the Church, we will investigate the different possibilities of using Christianity Explored in our congregation.
See you next week!
For those of you who want to read ahead (a good thing!), we will be covering chapters 1-5 of Clowney's book The Church in our first session (sounds like a lot, but it's only 53 pages, i.e., the equivalent of 2 normal chapters). If you still don't have the book, get it quickly - we still have a few copies left at the bookstore.
