The wide-ranging movement known as the Renaissance led to the rebirth of European culture spanning from the 14th through the 17th centuries. Building on this idea, the “Renaissance Christian” can then be defined as a believer in Christ who pursues information, knowledge, and wisdom as a daily priority in life. Recognizing the importance of the imago Dei (humankind uniquely created in the image of God, Genesis 1:26-27), the Renaissance Christian seeks to pursue "the life of the mind to the glory of God."

The consensus of historic Christianity is that God reveals truth in Two Books: the figurative book of nature (God’s world, general revelation) and the literal book of Scripture (God’s Word, special revelation). Therefore when Christ’s followers pursue truth of any kind they will see the signature of the Creator-Redeemer God who reveals the ultimate Truth.

The content of this class will help the individual Christian to sharpen their thinking, reading, and reflective skills as they seek to glorify God through utilizing their God given intellectual capacities. Specific lectures will be given on improving logical thinking, analytical reading, and worldview reflection.

So come to the Academy at Christ Reformed Church and adopt some New Year's resolutions for the mind.

Join us on Friday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m. when the Academy and Author's forum resumes with a special guest lecture by Dr. J.V. Fesko. Dr. Fesko will lecture on his new book Word, Water, and Spirit: A Reformed Perspective on Baptism.

Word, Water, and Spirit: A Reformed Perspective on Baptism is a comprehensive treatment of the doctrine of baptism that includes a survey of the history of the doctrine, a biblical theological study of the subject, as well as a systematic theological construction of the doctrine. The survey of the history of the doctrine covers the patristic church through the present day. The biblical theological survey covers baptism as new creation, covenant judgment, and eschatological judgment. And finally, the systematic construction covers baptism as a means of grace, as a sacrament, baptism proper, recipients, and its relationship to the doctrine of the church.

Dr. Fesko is a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He was ordained as a church planter in 1998 and was installed as a pastor in 2003, thus serving in pastoral ministry for over ten years. He has also taught systematic theology for Reformed Theological Seminary for over eight years as a part-time professor. He has served on two committees appointed by the General Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. His present research interests include the integration of biblical and systematic theology, soteriology, ecclesiology, and sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Reformed theology. Currently Dr. Fesko is the Academic Dean and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Seminary in Escondido, California.

After the lecture there will be a time for questions and answers, fellowship and refreshments. As always the lectures are free of charge.
